Italian Fiat plant intending to built a nuclear powered tanker according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad dated 18 June 1958

An item referred to a statement of engineer Aldo Ridolfo reporting that the Italian Fiat plants, Turin intended to built a 68,000 tons nuclear powered tanker by Ansaldo, Genoa. It was to be the first ocean going nuclear tanker ever fitted out with a by Fiat under licence of the American Westinghouse Company built reactor. Two tons of uranium was to be sufficient for 10,000 operation hourse. Main dimensions 229 x 32 metres. It was not known when the building was started. Other Dutch newspapers like the Overijselsch dagblad dated 18 June 1958 supplied more details added tot his note. In 1960 was the building of a 52,000 tons tanker mentioned. The  Nieuwe Guinea koerier dated 25 April 1961 reported that Fiat and Ansaldo signed a contract with the Italian Atomic Commission for the building. Fiat was to built the reactor and Ansaldo to design and built the tanker within a research program of 2 years. Euratom was asked for financial support. The Algemeen Dagblad dated 19 December 1961 wrote that Euratom signed a contract with Fiat and Ansaldo for building a 50,000 tons tanker, Euratom would pay 40% 0r 1,200,000 US dollars of the costs. Higson, Report of the proceedings of a symposium of nuclear ships Hamburg, Germany 10-15 May 1971 referred to this project since 1961, resulting in 1965 in a 80 thermal MW integral pressurized water reactor (PWR). He also mentioned that Italy was intending to built the naval research research vessel Enrico Fermi. The Documentation attached to Eight General Report of the Activities of the Community [Euratom] March 1964-February 1965 mentioned that in 1964 the development of a forced-circulation pressurized-water marine reactor continued and that possible by mid 1967 construction plans for a 50,000 tons deadweight tanker with around 23,500 shp could be drawn.
