First new Australian anti submarine frigate laid down according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 8 May 1957

An item reported that the first section of a pre-fabricated fast anti submarine frigate for the Royal Austrlain Navy was laid down at the Naval Dockyards, Williamstown on Tuesday 9 April. She was one out of the series of 4 frigates, one pair to be built at Williamstown and one pair at the Cockatoo Island Dockyard. The hull No. O4 was prefabricated in sections in the dockyard shipyard workshops. The launching was expected shortly after the assemblage and in 1958 should the welding be completed.(1)

1. Yarra part of Yarra-class Type 12, six projected as announced in August 1950, generally similar to the British Whitby-class, 4 built namely Derwent, Paramatta, Stuart and Yarra of 2,200 (standard)-2,800 (full load) and as dimensions 360 (between perpendiculars)-370 (over all) x 41 x 12 feet. Also called River-class destroyer escort, pennant F07/DE 45. Launched on 30 September 1958, commissioned on 26 July 1961, decommissioned on 22 November 1985 and sold to be broken up.
