New British fleet escorts to be armed with Sea Slug missiles according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 8 May 1957

An item referred to a statement of the First Lord of the Admiralty dealing with the future develoments in the British Royal Navy under the new United Kingdom programme. Four new fleet escorts were to armed with the anti air missile Sea Slug. For this purpose the convential design for a escort was to be enlarged. Compared with strength the new escorts came direclty after the cruisers and before the Daring-class [destroyers] and Apollo-class [Manxman-class?] fast minelayers. They would have a very powerful armament and an endurance capable enough to operate on their own.
