Chilean whaling partly temporarily discontinued according to the Commercial Fisheries Review dated August-September 1967 No. 8-9

An item reported that Chile caught in 1965 385 blue whales and 6 humpback whales and a year later 128 blue whales and 7 humpback whales. Regarded the 1965 season it was clear that regulation and conservation are not complete effective. The Chilean government licensed 2 Chilean fishing companies to whale but the major part (particularly blue and humback whales) was caught by one company. That same company had in the past two seasons an agreement with a Japanese company to operated 5 whale catchers and sell the catch for processing at the plant at Quintay and subsequent export of whale products to Japan. Officials of this company however claimed that this agreement would not be renewed and that she ended her whaling activities temporarily. This decision had been made due to scarcity of the whales and the low profit. They hoped that the whale population build up again in the coming period. In fact their withdrawal meant just a minimal catch of blue and humpback whales off the Chilean coast for the time being.
