Romanian trawlers active on the Georges Bank according to the Commercial Fisheries Review dated August-September 1967 No. 8-9

An item reported that Romania fishing vessels fished on the Georges Bank mainly for herring. It took 24 days to sail from a Romanian harbour to the fishing area and return, the fishing itself around 50 days. Average catches in 1966 daily 40-50 metric tons/vessel sometimes even maximum 70 tons. Production costs metric ton Georges Bank herring to the fishing industry was around 7,000 lei/589.20 US dollars, selling price around 10,000 lei/842.70 US dollars. A profit for the government owned industry. To expand the profit however planned Romania to buy 15 large stern factory trawlers for fishing at the Georges Bank and Soutwest Africa. In 1966 there were just 2 alternating stern factory trawlers available for fishing in the northwestern and southeastern Atlantic. Both ships were purchased in Japan (2) and had a fishery specialist on board for collecting and interpreting data on species and ocanographic conditions.
