British battleships HMS Iron Duke, Emperor of India, Ajax and Centurion bound for Malta according to the Secret Admiralty Weekly Intelligence Summary Nr. 31 for the week ending 6 August 1921

Iron Duke-class

King George V-class

An item reported that the British battleships HMS Iron Duke(1), Emperor of India (2), Centurion (3) and Ajax (4) were to leave Constantinople, Turkey at the end of September or early October bound for Malta.

Notes

1. Of the Iron Duke-class consisting of the Iron Duke, Marlborough, Benbow and Emperor of India. Preceded by the King George V-class and succeeded by the Queen Elizabeth-class. Laid down at the Portsmouth Dockyard on 12 January 1912, launched on 12 October 1912, completed in March 1914, removed from active service becoming a training ship in 1929, depot ship at Scapa Flow since 1939, damaged during an German air attack on 17 October 1939, after repairs beached still in service, sold to the Metal Industries be broken up in 1946. Resold in September 1948 brought towards Glasgow, Scotland and arrived there on 30 November 1948.

2. Part of the Iron Duke-class battleships (5x2-34.4cm/13.5” cal 45 Mk V guns), preceded by King George V-class, succeeded by Queen Elizabeth-class, ordered in 1911, laid down by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness on 31 May 1912, launched on 27 November 1913, commissioned on 10 November 1914, decommissioned and sunk as target in 1931, salvaged and sold to be broken up broken on 6 February 1932 arriving 10 days later at the scrapyard.

3. Part of the King George V-class consisting of the King George V (ex-Royal George), Audacious, Centurion and Ajax, preceded by the Orion-class and succeeded by the Iron Duke-class. Laid down at the navy yard Portsmouth, England on 16 January 1911, launched in 18 November 1911, completed in May 1913, converted into a target ship in 1924, ideas to used her as block ship in the harbour of Tripoli, Libya declined in April 1941, converted with a false superstructure into a decoy for the HMS Anson in April 1941-1942 and finally sunk as a breakwater off Normandy in June 1944.

4. Part of the King George V-class consisting of the King George V (ex-Royal George), Audacious, Centurion and Ajax, preceded by the Orion-class and succeeded by the Iron Duke-class. Laid down by Scotts Shipbuilding&Engineering, Greenock on 27 February 1911, launched on 21 March 1912, completed in May 1913, commissioned on 31 October 1913, decommissioned in April 1924, out of service in October and sold to be broken up on 10 December 1926.
