A strong support by the government and active participation by the industry in Japan resulted in a number of ideas for nucelar-propelled merchant ships. At the Second Geneva Conference in 1958 were plans for a submarine tanker and an emigrant ship presented. The in the end of 1957 founded Nuclear Ship Specialists Committee presented the following design of a nuclear-propelled cargo-passenger ship (shelter decker) with as dimensions 165.0 (between perpendiculars)-179.5 (over all) x 24.5 (moulded) x 13.45 (moulded)-8.5 (full load) meters, 17,000 tons gross tonnage, 5,400 tons deadweight and a full load displacement of 19,830 tonsSpeed 21.5 (service)-22.5 (maximum) knots. Crew numbered 250 men. Accommodation for 1,800 passengers. Type reactor PWR, reactor output75 Mw(t), number of main engines (steam turbines) 1 and 20,000 (normal)-22,000 (maximum) hp rating.
