Japanese design for a 20,000 tons nuclear-propelled tanker (10,000 hp three islander) around 1958

A strong support by the government and active participation by the industry in Japan resulted in a number of ideas for nucelar-propelled merchant ships. At the Second Geneva Conference in 1958 were plans for a submarine tanker and an emigrant ship presented. The in the end of 1957 founded Nuclear Ship Specialists Committee presented the following design of a  20,000 tons nuclear-propelled tanker (10,000 hp three islander) with as dimensions 168.0 (between perpendiculars)-176.5 (over all) x 23.2 (moulded) x 12.7 (moulded)-9.5 (full load) meters, 13,600 tons gross tonnage, 20,000 tons deadweight and a full load displacement of 28,610 tons. Speed 15.25 (service)-16.25 (maximum) knots. Crew numbered 65 men.Type reactor BWR direct cycle, reactor output Mw(t) 45, number of main engines (steam turbines) 1 and 9,000 (normal)-10,000 (maximum) hp rating.
