In his letter dated Istanbul, Turkey 27 January 1940 No. 690g. reported the German naval attaché to the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht Abteilung Ausland the ships passing Istanbul coming out of the Black Sea and loaded with contraband for or chartered by the enemy. An item referred to a telegram reporting on 25 January the British steam tanker Cymbula loaded with 11,442 ton petrol underway from Constanta, Romania towards Preston, England. Armed with 1 gun and 1 flak on the stern. 2 Masts. Funnel yellow painted, further whole ship dark grey.
