British submarine HMS Swordfish (61S) 1930-1940


A S-class submarine. Laid down at the Chatham Dockyard 1 December 1930, launched 10 November 1921, commissioned and presumably sunk by a mine 7 November 1940. Her wreck was found in 1983 in about 46m deep water around 12 miles south of St. Catherine’s Head, Wight. When she was sunk there were an additional 40 men on board which were to relieve the crew of HMS Usk.

Displacement 640 tons while surfaced and 935 tons submerged and as dimensions 202’6” x24 x 10’6”. Fitted out with diesel/electric engines allowing a speed of 13,75 knots while surfaced and 10 knots while submerged. Her crew numbered 36 men. She was armed with 6-21” torpedo tubes fore (had on board 12 torpedoes), 1-3” gun, 1-20mm gun and 1-.303 machinegun.
