Described as extremely quiet. A former submarine hunter killer of the Barracuda-class with sister ships Barracuda and Bass. Laid down at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard 17 March 1950, launched 21 June 1951, completed 11 February 1952. test ship in the 1958 Atomic Weapons tests and suffered just superficial damage. In 1959 pennant changed from SSK 3 to SS552. Displacement 765 tons standard and 1.160 tons submerged with dimensions 196 1/12 (over all) x 24 7/12 x 14 5/12 (mean) feet and a speed of 13 knots surfaced and submerged. Her crew numbered 47 men. Armed with 4-21” torpedo tubes.
