St. Thomas asking for an American station ship according to the Dutch newspaper Het Vaderland: staat- en letterkundig nieuwsblad evening edition dated 5 February 1935

St. Thomas which was the largest island of the Virgin Islands a former Danish colony which was bought in 1916 by the United States of America asked the American government to station a warship over there. The reason was not that the inhabitants expected a war but they believed that the expenses done by the officers and other crewmembers of such a ship was sufficient enough to sort out the finance of the island. According to them possessed the island a magnificent harbour to station such a ship and the island didn’t have to ask any more for financial support of the American government. (1)

Note
