American steam side-wheel gunboat USS Harvest Moon 1863-1865



Launched in 1863 at Portland, Maine was she bought from Charles Spear of Boston, Massachusetts on 16 November 1863 and at the navy yard there rebuilt as a gunboat. She was commissioned on 12 February of the next year and sunk on 29 February 1865 in the Winyah Bay, South Carolina when she struck a torpedo mine and unable to be salvaged. Her engines were removed and she was left behind on 21 April. In 1963 was tried to salvage her but the efforts apparently failed. With a displacement of 546 tons were her dimensions 193’x 29’x 8’. She had a speed of 15 knots and the armament consisted of 4-24pdr howitzers.
