In a Dutch monthly magazine appeared in July 1779 an interesting news item. The translation is as follows. Six ladies of London decided to fit out a 28-gun privateer and each donated a certain amount of money of more than 500 pound sterling. She was to cruise against French and Spanish shipping and baptised the Ladies's Adventure. Also the women of Plymouth seemed to have donated money for the same purpose. The last tiding was that the women of all sea towns in the Kingdom intend to follow this example.
