In 1859 Hans Busk (p.105) gave the following information dealing with the Brazilian Navy. There was 1 frigate, 5 corvettes, 2 barques, 5 brigs, 7 brigantines, 1 vessel of unknown class, 4 schooners and 2 gunboats, totally 27 sailing ships and 7 screw steamships and 8 paddle steamships, totally 15 steamships with 1770 hp total. Her navy was divided in following five divisions: Rio de Janeiro (13 sail, 10 steam), Bahia (4 sail and 1 steam), Pernambuco (23 sail and 1 steam), Maranhao (3 sail and 1 steam) and finally Rio Plata (4 sail and 2 steam). Besides the above mentioned ships were in the province of Matta Grosso 29 gun boats available and in autumn 1858 3 frigates, 4 corvettes and one steamer were in a building process. There were totally 3345 seamen available of which 672 were commissioned and non-commissioned officers.
