Originally named Kiev, completed at Nikolayev as a larger version of the Novgorod. Both vessels were stricken around 1900. Displacement 3550 tons, draught 4,1m, diameter 36,6m, 203 men, speed 8 knots with 6 steam engines with total 3355 kW and 6 screw. Armour with 335/405mm on sides, a 405mm barbette, deck 76mm and 175mm funnels. Armed with 2-305mm guns, 8-86mm guns (later reduced to 6), 2-1pdr swivels and spar torpedo's. Designed by vice-admiral Popov, commanding the Black Sea Fleet, to protect Nikolayev and the mouth of the Dnjepr.
