North Carolina-class
An item reported that in June the North Carolina was to be launched, the first new American battleship since the Treaty of Washington of 1921.(1) The department of navy announced that six battleships of the same type with a measurement of 35,000 tons were being build.

1. Her building at the New York Naval Shipyard was ordered on 1 August 1937, laid down on 27 October that same year, launched on 13 June 1940 and baptized by the daughter of governor Clyde R. Hoey, commissioned on 9 April 1941, building costs were 76,885,750 US dollars, decommissioned on 27 June 1947 and stricken on 1 June 1960 and nowadays still existing. She was nicknamed Showboat. The main armament consisted of 9-16” guns. With a displacement of 37,484 short tons/34,005 tons (standard)-44,377 short tons/40,258 tons (loaded) with as dimensions 222,1 x 33,0 x 10,1 metres or 728.8 x 180.3 x 33.0 feet. Her crew numbered 2,339 men. She had a speed of 26 knots. Of the Nortg Carolina-class consisting of the North Carolina and Washington, preceded by the Colorado and South Dakota-classes and succeeded by the Dakota-class.
