When Thomas Francis Gordon described Hudson City in his Gazetteer of the state of New York (Philadelphia, 1836) he wrote on page 408 he mentioned that there were 11 whalers of which three belonged to the Hudson Whaling Company which company had a capital of 100, 000 dollars. The other whalers were owned by individuals.
