An item reported that the steamer Mexican of the Union Castle Line which left Cape Town on the 4th sunk after a collision with the transport Winkfield on a distance from eighty miles from Cape Town.(1) The Winkfield left on 14 March London towards Cape Town. Every one on board of the Mexican was saved just like most of the mail bags.
The edition dated 11 April reported that according to tidings from Cape Town soon after the collision the transport Montrose arrived supporting both ships. Just like the Winkfield were on board of the Montrose yeomen embarked all destined for Cape Town. These men did everything to save the passengers and mailbags of the Mexican. When the Mexican was left behind she was still floating. A large tug left Cape own to salvage her if possible.

The passenger ship Mexican was build in 1883 by the shipyard of Sir James Laing&Sons, Sunderland, England. The website http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?158936 reported that she had a gross tonnage of 4,661 tons and as dimensions 115,3 x 14, x 8,9 metres. Her triple expansion engine supplied 649 nhp allowing a speed of 12 knots. IMO no. 1086330. Building number 273.
