Striking stokers prevented departure of British troop transport Manchester according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 9 August 1901

An item reported that all available men belonging to three regiments in England were ordered to embark on 21 August. The transport Manchester Merchant departed recently with on board 131 men and 274 horses towards South Africa. She did get far away caused by striking stokers. Immediately were measures taken to replace them.

1. The Second Boer War found place between 11 October 1899 and 31 May 1902 and ended in a defeat of the Boers and regaining British sovereignty of the Orange Free State and South African Republic (Transvaal). In 1920 became the Union of South Africa part of the Commonwealth.
