US navy decreasing Atlantic and Pacific Fleet according to the Indonesian newspaper Het nieuwsblad voor Sumatra dated 9 August 1957
An item reported that the US navy announced that she intended to withdrew in the coming five months sixty warships of the Atlantic and Pacific fleet to reduce the costs. This included the battleship Iowa. Further more intended the cabinet to reduce the operational and personnel expenses in the new tax year which started on 1 July. As a result of this withdrawal was just one battleship the Wisconsin left in active service. Some of the ships were to be laid up before December and to be replaced by new or modernized ships. Among the sixty warships were included the Iowa, 24 destroyers, 2 submarines, 5 landing craft, 2 attack freighters, 14 minesweepers, 7 coastal minesweepers and 5 transports.
