The American auxiliary cruiser USS Panther missing according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad dated 8 January 1913

An item referred to tidings received from New York that since the last three days no contact have been met de auxiliary cruiser Panther with 120 men on board.(1) It was feared that while underway she was lost in the heavy gale during the last days.

1. This must be the USS Panther (AD)-6 which served as an auxiliary cruiser and as a naval troop transport. She was purchased by the US navy on 12 April 1898 as the ss Venezuela and commissioned 10 days later. In the next decades she was several times (de)commissioned until for the last time in May 1922 decommissioned and sold on 23 March a year later. With a displacement of 4.328 tons/4.269 long tons were her dimensions 98,86 x 12,34 x 5,550 metres or 324’4”x 40’6”x 18’2.5”. Her armament consisted of 6-13cm/5” guns, 2-10cm/4” huns, 6-3pdr guns, 1 colt and 1-7,6cm/3” howitzer.
