Active life of German, French and German major warships according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1907-1908 No. 8

An item referred to the magazine le Yacht which magazine published a note of Mr. Laubeuf dealing with the theoretical age limit of warships. In England were the limits for battleships and armoured cruisers 22, protected cruisers 20, aviso’s 15 and for destroyers and torpedo boats 11 years. Germany in contrary for battleships and armoured cruisers 25 years although for the newer kinds 20 years just like for protected cruisers. A note written by Mr. M.Ch. Bos give as limits battleships 25, armoured cruisers 20, submarines 15 and torpedo vessels 11 years. In the practice were the figures. In England was the limit for battleships just 11-13 years and considered France was the Brennus of 1891 the limit. Germany were the battleships of the Brandenburg-design of 1891-1892 already described as floating coffins. The conclusion was that the age limit of a combat worthy battleship was maximum 13-14 years.
