Experts afraid for stability of Japanese cruiser Mogami according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1934 no. 4

An item referred to the magazine Proc. dated May 1934 reporting that according to some naval experts the stability of the Japanese cruiser Mogami (1) just launched could not be good. With a displacement of 8.050 ton was her draught less as 15’ instead of the 20’ of US cruisers. Her main armament consisted of 15-15,2cm guns. The draught of the Japanese Tomotsoeroe (2) had also a very small draught of just 6’. She capsized although later salvaged taking with her 100 men of a crew numbering 113 men.

1. Laid down at the Kure Naval Arsenal on 27 October 1931, launched on 14 March 1934, completed on 28 July a year later and sunk on 25 October 1944 in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
2. This was the 535 ton torpedo boat Tomozuru of the Tomozuru-class, launched at the Maizuru Navy Yard on1 October 1933 and sunk on 23 March 1945 by US aircraft. She capsized on 12 March 1934 during her trial due to her excessive top weight.
