As
a result of an still increasing German navy was it necessary to increase the
number of naval stations along the Baltic coastline where Kiel was for a long time the only navy
harbour. In 1902 was Mürwitz near Fiensburg, Schleswig-Holstein added where for
instance the torpedo instruction ship Blucher was stationed. Both stations were
according to the naval authorities insufficient and four ports were inspected
of which one was to become the new naval base. The four ports were Eckernrode,
Sonderburg, Afrenrode and Swinemünde. Vice admiral Golster, inspector of the
naval artillery was negotiating with the authorities of Sonderburg for founding
a naval base at that port.
