Cherbourg again major French naval base according to the Dutch newspaper Schiedamsche Courant dated 24 August 1934

After the visit of the French minister of navy at Cherbourg were the activities started to make the harbour of Cherbourg suitable as naval support centre. The intention was to concentrate a large naval force at Cherbourg to make the city just like for the First World the most important naval base in the Channel and North Sea in case of war. In November were several units now stationed in the Mediterranean harbours Toulon and Bizerte to be transferred via Brest to Cherbourg. The navy arsenal at Cherbourg which built since the war mainly submarines was to be reorganised and make suitable to repair also warships. The harbour was to be extended and a large quay to be made, total costs 20,000,000 francs
