At
Toulon arrived the French brig of war le Lutin 7
August which left Tunis
27 July. While she departed arrived the French squadron commanded by admiral
Gallois. The 3 ships of the line part of this squadron and commanded by rear
admiral Lalande anchored off Goletta near the entrance of the bay of Tunis
to prevent foreign warships to enter the bay. These so-called foreign warships
were in fact the Turkish fleet. Regularly send both French commanding officers
brigs towards sea to observe if the Turkish fleet could be sighted. In a letter
written on board of a French ship was said that if the Turkish would appear off
Golette they were ready for them and even could prevent the entering of the bay
by a force of 50 ships. The brig le Lutin was apparently send towards France
for more specified orders how to handle if the Turkish fleet appeared.
