The Greek and the Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 31 May 1826

Vienna, 19 May. The newspaper Oesterreichischer Beobachter gave more information what happened around Missolunghi. The Greeks in the fortress requested Napoli-di-Romana for help against the Turkish. In stead of fighting against the Turkish fleet, the Greek navy seemed to be more interested in pursuing in the Archipelago for rich loaded European ships. Finally, around the mid of April arrived around 30 ships of Hydra and Spezzia in the waters of Patras to beak the blockade and siege of Missolunghi. They weren’t successful and according to the tidings were the Greeks forced to retreat while 2 ships were destroyed, some others heavily damaged and 5 seeking refuge in the bay of Petala, north of Missolunghi, where they were blockaded by the Turkish.
