According to the newspaper of Odessa departed in end March of begin April 2 Russian ships from Sizipolis towards Varna to take there another 1.500 men on board to strengthen the force at Sizipolis. To prevent that the Turkish forces could be united for an attack against that last city bombarded rear admiral Kumany 23 March Akhioli without causing much damage. The waters were to shallow to approach near enough with his ships of the line. The next day a storm forced him to retreat and to return to the safe harbour of Sizipolis. The small vessels succeeded in coming nearer and wee shot by the Turkish batteries losing 5 men and another 16 wounded. Kumany had taken all precautions while the tiding was received that the Turkish fleet which left Constantinople towards the Bosporus was destined for the Gulf of Earos where Sizipolis was lying.
