German standardized submarine building to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1917-1918 no. 5

An item referred to the Proceedings dated June 1917 dealing with the German submarine fleet. It was believed that of the latest 1.500 ton submarine design around forty units were available each with a crew numbering 56 men. Their speed was fast enough to overhaul each cargo ship. The losses submarines of the German navy since the outbreak of the war were estimated to be around 80-100 units. Lacking enough skilled personnel consisted the crew of 2/3 trained and 1/3 untrained men. More interesting is the description of the building of submarines, nowadays in 15 days. All necessary parts were standardized manufactured by dozens at the same time and which were sent towards the shipyards at Kiel or Hamburg. There were the submarines assembled by technical skilled personnel within the earlier 15 days.
