Spanish warship (s) fought with American schooner USS Firebrand according to the Dutch newspaper De Curacaosche courant dated 9 November 1816

An item dated New Orleans, USA 11th September reported that according a tiding van a mister living on Balize [Belize?] the 9-gun schooner of the USA Firebrand commanded by lieutenant Cunningham was attacked by a Spanish warship accompanied by a second one a few days before leaving Balize. One American sailor was killed. When she answered the gunfire fled the Spanish. In the item was suggested that perhaps these Spanish warships belonged to a small squadron fitted out at Havana, Cuba to act against South American privateers.
