American screw steam gunboat USS Shawmut visited Willemstad, Cyracao according to the Dutch newspaper De Curacaosche courant dated 6 July 1872


An item reported the arrival on Wednesday the 3rd of the USS Shawmut coming from Perto Cabello, Venezuela commanded by E.E. Potter departing on Friday towards Santa Martha.(1)

1. Screw steam gunboat. Laid down at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine, USA on 2 February 1863, launched and sponsored by Mss Lucy Hall on 17 April, towed to New York City where her engines were placed by the South Brooklyn Works, handed over to the Union Navy on 16 October 1864, commissioned at the new York Navy Yard 1 November, decommissioned at the Norfolk navy Yard around 22 January 1877 and sold on 27 September. With a displacement of 593 tons were her dimensions 179’6”x 30’0”” x ?. With a speed of 11 knots, a crew numbering 35 men  and an armament consisting of 1-100pd Parrott rifle, 2-9” Dahlgren smoothbore guns, 1-30pd Parrott rifle, 2-30pd howitzers and 2-12pd rifles.
