German battleship SMS Friederich der Grosse 1910-1919 (1936)


Part of the Kaiser-class. Laid down as the Ersatz Heimdall at the AG Vulkan werft, Hamburg, Germany on 26 January 1910, launched on 10 June 1911, christened by Princess Alexandra Victoria commissioned on 15 October 1912, completed fitte out for service on 22 January 1913, after the Armistice (First World War) interned at Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, Scotland, scuttled by her own crew on 21 June 1919, raised in 1936 and broken up.

With a displacement of 24.724 tons/24.334 long tons (design)-27.000 tons/26.570 long tons (maximum) and as dimensions 172,40 x 29 x 9,10 metres or 565.7 x 95.2 x 29.10 feet. The 3-shaft AEG Curtis turbines delivered 27.617hp allowing a speed of 22,4 knots and with a speed of 12 knots a range of 7.900 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 1.084 men (included 41 officers). The armament consisted pf a 35cm/14” thick belt while the conning tower and gun turrets were protected by 40cm/16” respectively 30cm/12”. The armament consisted of 5x2-30,5cm/12” quick firing L/50guns, 14-15cm/5.8” quick firing L/45guns in casemates amidships, 12-8,8cm/3.5” guns and 5-50xm/20” torpedo tubes.
