Submarine building in USA delayed according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad 1917/1918 no. 3

An item reported that on 1 January 1917 34 submarines for the US Navy were being built. Despite the approval was the building of another 30 yet not started. The completion of the L and O type submarines was considerable delayed cause by the too late delivery of diesel engines. Of the 64 submarines in the US Navy were just 5 boats able to exceed the speed of 14 miles, the others were to have a speed of 13,5-14 miles. The 800 ton submarine was considered to best the best type for defensive tasks. In the future was the intention to built submarines able to achieve higher speed and which could cooperate with other warships.
