British heavy cruiser HMS Exeter 1928- 942


Building ordered on 15 March 1928, laid down at the Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth, England on 1 August 1928, launched on 18 July 1929, commissioned on 27 July 1931, refitted in 1932, participated in the Battle of the River Plate against the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee and finally sunk during the Second Battle of the Java Sea as part of the allied squadron [Striking Force] commanded by the Dutch rear admiral Karel Doorman against Japanese forces on 1 March 1942. Of the York-class wit as sister ship York, preceded by the County-class. Pennant 68.

Displacement 8.520 (standard)-10.660 (full load) tons and as dimensions 164,6 (between perpendiculars)-175,3 (over all) x 17,7 x 5,2 metres or 540.1-575.1 x 58 x 17 feet. The 4 geared steam turbine sets and 8 Admiralty 3-drum boilers supplied via 4 shafts 80.000 shp allowing a speed of 32 knots and with a speed of 14 knots a range of 10.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 628 men. The armour consisted of a 7,6cm/3” thick belt, a 3,8cm/1.5” thick deck, 11,1cm/4.375” thicj bulkheads with the gun turrets, barbettes and magazines protected by respectively 2,5cm/1”, 2,5cm/1”and 7,6-14cm/3-5’5” thick armour. The armament consisted of 3x2-20,3cm/8” guns, 4x1-10,2cm/4” anti aircraft guns, 2x1-4cm/2pd anti aircraft guns and 2x3-53,3cm/21” torpedo tunes. Further more she carried two seaplanes with her for which 2 aircraft catapults were available.
