Defence of Freetown and Robben Island strengthened according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1938 no. 6

An item referred to the Proceedings dated July 1938 reporting that Freetown was the best natural harbour along the West African coast where for the larges battleships a suitable anchorage was available.(1) Along the coast was started with building foundations for the mountings needed for heavy guns. Also the defence of Robben Island near Cape Town, South Africa was strengthened apparently with 38cm/14.9” guns.

1. Freetown, Sierra Leone was a British Crown Colony between 1808-1961 served as a major naval base during the Second World War being of huge importance for the Allied shipping.
