The Italian naval building program according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1938 no. 5

With our thanks

Roma

An item dated leYacht dated 2 April 1938 reported that in January 1938 for the Italian navy under construction were 2-35.000 ton battleships (1), 12-1.600 ton destroyers, 16-700 ton destroyers, 22, submarines and some aviso’s and auxiliary ships. The building of 2-35.000 tons battleships, 12-3.000 ton destroyers and a number of submarines was being prepared. The Italian cabinet did not support the building of aircraft carriers while there were enough air force bases to control the Mediterranean. This was a contradiction with the ocean-going fleet.

Note
1. This must be the Littorio-class consisting o the Littorio, Vittorio Veneto, Roma and Impero, although they had actually a displacement of 45.236 tons. The First two were laid down in 1934, the last two in 1930 although the the Impero never was completed.
