French submarine Espadon hardly escaped fate when loosing rudder according to the magazine Mitteilungen aus dem Gebiete des Seewesens dated 1912 No. 12

An item reported that the French submarine Espadon while she was submerged and steaming on a depth of 15 metres off Lorient after a heavy blow lost her rudder. By dropping her safety ballast succeeded she to reach the surface and was she towed by the tug Haleur towards Brest, France.(1)

1. The Espadon (Q13) of the Sirène-class, laid down at Arsenal Cherbourg, France in 1900, launched on 7 September 1901, completed in June 1902 and decommissioned in November 1919.
