Coal shipping from Spitsbergen hampered according to the Dutch newspaper De Maasbode dated 27 September 1916

An item referred to tidings from Bergen reporting that the shipping of coal from Spitsbergen in last summer was insignificant while the coastline in the last months was blocked by ice. The American company at Advent Bay stored 200.00 ton ready for transport but until now just a few was shipped.(1)

1. Advent Bay or Advntfjorden is probably the corrupted name of the Hull whaler Adventure dating from 1665. At the end of the bay is Adventdalen. On the south western and north eastern shores are the forming mining camps Longyearbyen respectively Hiorthhmn lying. The coal mining started in 1899. Americans started in 1909 at Longyearbyen.
