British battle cruiser HMS Repulse 1915-1941

Battle cruiser of the Renown-class, originally designed as a Revenge-class battleship. Laid down by John Brown and Company, Clydebank, Scotland on 25 January 1915, launched on 8 January 1916, commissioned on 18 August 1916 and sunk by Japanese aircraft off Kuantan, South Chinese Sea on 10 December 1941. Of her crew were 508 men killed. Sadly was her wreck although being a war grave disturbed by scrap metal dealers just like what happened with warships of the Netherlands, Australia and the USA lost in the Second World War.

Original technical characteristics. Displacement 27.600 (normal)-32.740 (deep) tons and as dimensions 228,7 (between perpendiculars)-242 (over all) x 27,5 x 8,3 metres ot 750.2-7794 1.5 x 90.1 1.75 x 27 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 steam turbines sets and 42 water tube boilers supplying via 4 shafts 112.000 shp-118.913 (trials) allowing a speed of 31,5 knots. Fuel oil bunker capacity 1.016-4.358 tons. With the maximum bunker capacity and a speed of 18 knots was her range around 4.000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 967-1222 (in 1919). The armament consisted of 3x2-38,1cm/15” guns, 6x3 and 2x1-10,2cn/4” guns, 2x1-7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns and 2-53,3cm/21” torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 7,6cm/3”-15,2cm/6” thick belt, 2,5cm/1”-6,4cm/1.5” thick decks,7,6cm/3”-10,2cm/4” thick bulkheads while the barbettes, gun turrets and conning tower were protected by respectively 10,2cm/4”-17,8cm/7”, 17,8cm/7”-22,9cm/9” and 25,4cm/10” thick armour. In the 1930s modernized resulting in a displacement of 35.200 tons. In 1939 consisted her armament of  3x2-38,1cm/15” guns, 4x3-10,2cm/4”guns, 2x1-10,2cm/4” anti aircraft guns, 2xquadruple 4cm/1.6” 2 pounder so-called pom-pom anti aircraft guns. 1-7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns.
