Japanese whaling companies got an extra whaling quota to compensate losses in kings crab pot fishing experiment according to the Commercial Fisheries Review dated September 1963

An item referred to the Suidan Tsushin dated 2 August 1963 reporting that the Japanese Fisheries Agency granted two large Japanese firms on a profit basis a special extra catch quota of 60 blue whales for the 1963 North Pacific-Bering Sea, resulting in a total quota of 287 blue whales. This extra quota was to compensate their losses the same year during an experiment in the Gulf of Alaska with king crab pot fishing. They planned a joint venture with one mother ship but the experiment was postponed after protest of the USA. In the meantime was already 120 million Yen/333.000 US dollars spent for the preparations.
