Of the Casablanca escort carrier class, preceded by the Sangamon-class and succeeded by the Commencement Bay-class.Building ordered as a Type S4-S2-BBS hull MCE hull 1119, building awarded on 18 June 1942, laid down by Kaiser Shipyards on 1 November 1943, launched on 19 January 1944, commissioned on 2 March 1944, decommissioned on 19 June 1946, stricken on 1 March 1959 and sold to be broken up on 27 November 1959. The Dutch newspaper Het vaderland reported her arrival on the Nieuwe Waterweg in the evening of the 5th April 1960 towed by the Dutch tug Zeeland. It was the first time that an aircraft carrier was to be broken up in the Netherlands. When delivered for the voyage at Boston she was still ready to sail although her armament was disabled. Tug and aircraft carrier left Boston on 6 March. On a distance of 500 miles west of Cape Race (Newfoundland) lost the tug her tow when the lines broken in a heavy gale but after some days the connection was restored. According to another Dutch newspaper Arnhemsche courant dated 6th needed the scrapping around six months. Displacement 8.319 (standard)-11.077 (full load) tons and as dimensions 150 (waterline)-156,13 (over all) x 19,86-33 (extreme) x 6,32 (maximum) metres or 490-512.3 x 65.2-108 x 20.9 feeet. The two Skinner Unaflow reciprocating steam engines and 4 Babcock&Wilcox boilers supplied via 2 screws 9.000 shp allowing a speed of 9 knots and a range of 10.240 nautical miles with 15 knots. Crew numbered 910-916 me consisting of 860 crew members and 50-56 aircraft personnel. Original armament 1-12,7c,5”cal 38 dual purpose gun, 8x1-4cm/1.57” Bofors anti aircraft guns and 12-2cm/0.79 Oerlikon anti aircraft cannons.
