American whaler Rainbow leaving Port Russell, New Zealand according to the New Zealand newspaper Daily Southern Cross dated 28 June 1873

Fishermen in boats have been attacking a whale but one boat is upset and a man is falling out.

An item reported the departure from the port of Russell, New Zealand on 16 June of the whaler barque Rainbow master Gray towards the whaling grounds.(1)

1. Whalemen's Shipping List dated 8 April 1873 reported as homeport New Bedford, USA, of 351 tons, agents Charles H. Gifford, departure on 1 November 1870.
