Launched as the Laënnec by the Chantiers de Penhoët, Saint-Nazaire, France on 7 August 1902 and her maiden voyage begun on 23 Ocober 1902. First owned by the Société Anonyme des Armateurs Nantais (1902–1906 and afterwards by the Compagnie Plisson (1906–1922). For sale on 1 December 1920 was she laid up and sold end November 1922 to H. H. Schmidt & Co., Hamburg, Germany and renamed Oldenburg  and used as training ship for the German merchant navy, sold in 1928 to Seefahrt Segelschiffs-Reederei GmbH, Bremen, Germany, sold in 1930 to the State of Finland, renamed Suomen Joutsen on 1 November 1931, property of the National Board of Vocational Education since 1960 and since 1991 of the town Turku. Finland. Finland-flagged, IMO 8640349 and call sign OHIT. Gross register tonnage 2.393 tons, net register tonnage 1.734 ton, deadweight 3.100 tons, displacement as school ship 2.900 tons and as dimensions 80 (waterline)-96 (over all) x 12.3 x 52 (height) x 5.15 (as school ship)-6.35 (draught) x 7.29 (depth) metres or 262.6-315.0 x 40.4 x 170.7 x 16.11-20.10 x 23.11 feet.
