Thieves robbed wreck of Spanish cruiser Almirante Oquendo according to the Dutch newspaper Venloosch nieuwsblad dated 29 November 1899

An item referred to the American newspaper New York Herald reporting that Cuban thieves found around 19.000 US dollars in Spanish golden coins in the wreck of the Spanish cruiser Almirante Oquendo.(1)

1. Of the Infanta Maria Teresa-class armored cruisers, laid down at Astilleros del Nervion Society, Sestao, Spain on 16 November 1889, launched on 3 October 1891, commissioned on 21 August 1895 and lost in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba on 3 July 1899.
