An item dated Washington, USA 8th reported that the crew of the 5.000 tons merchant ship Idarwald (1) set fire into her when off Cuba a British cruiser was approaching. The Idarwald was one of the ships which recently left Tampico, Mexico. A British prize crew however managed after embarking the abandoned ship to extinguish the fire, lowering the German swastika flag and hoisting the British war flag.(2)

1. Intercepted by the British HMS Diomede, still sunk the next day off Cabo Corrientes, Cuba. Built by Deutsche Werft A.G. Betrieb Finkerwärder, Hamburg, Germany for the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt AG, (HAPAG), Hamburg in 1923. Gross tonnage 5.033 tons, under deck 4.478 tons, net tonnage 2.990 tons and as dimensions 399.6 x 54.2 x 27.4 feet.

Part of the Danae-class light cruisers, preceded by C-class, succeeded by Emerald-class. building ordered in March 1918, laid down by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom, on 3 June 1918, launched on 29 April 1919, work suspended, completed at tha Royal Dockyard, Portsmouth on 22 February 1922, commissioned in October 1922, decomissioned on 5 April 1946 and sold to be broken up ny Arnott Young, Dalmiur, Scotland arriving there in May 1946.
