Germany agreed not to attack Chilean ships outside the Panama Canal vessels according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 27 March 1942

An item reported that the Chilean government had a deal with the Axis that Chilean vessels were not attacked except when passing the Panama Canal. However Chile warned the Axis that an attack on this canal would be considered to be an act of war.
