Statue of Bulgarian naval machinist, poet and communist Nikola Yonkov Vaptsarov 1909-1942

Despite publishing just one poetry book he is one of the most important Bulgarian poets. Born at Bansko, Ottoman Empire (nowadays Bulgaria) and executed on 23 July 1942 at Sofia, Bulgaria. Being communist he deployed underground activities against the Bulgarian king Boris III (reigned 3 October 1918-28 August 1943) and the German military in Bulgaria. When the Second World War in 1939 broke out was Bulgaria neutral. However in March 1941 chose Bulgaria the side of the Axis. The so-called Fatherland Front including the Bulgarian Communist Party resisted against the Bulgarian government. Vaptsarov organizing the supply of weapons and documents was arrested in March 1942 and shot down on 23 July 1942. He was skilled as a marine engineer at the Naval Machinery School, Varna. This school was later named after him. After a naval career he became a laborer at a factory at Kocherinovo, after 1936 he moved for Sofia.
