Dutch submarine Hr.Ms. KVIII 1917-1942

Building ordered on 27 June 1917, laid down with yard number 167 at the Kon.Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands 17/31 October on the so-called Island, launched on 28 March 1922, berthed trials on 31 March 1922, official trial on 2 June 1922, delivered on 14 September 1922, decommissioned at Fremantle, Australia on 15 July 1942, sunk underway to be broken up. The wreck was blown in 1957 while it was a threat for the shipping although remains were still visible around 1970.

Improved KIII-class based on an Electric Boat Company design which was during the construction considerable changed by the Dutch naval engineer J. van der Struijff using First World War submarine warfare experiences. Dimensions 64.084 (over all) x 5,426 x 4,856 x 3,56 metres and a displacement of 520 (standard)-581,9 (surfaced)-722,7 (submerged) tons. Diving depth officially 40 metres. Speed 15 (contracted)-16,132 (surfaced)-8 (submerged) knots and a range of 3,500 nautical miles/11 knots (surfaced)-12 nautical miles/8,5 (submerged) knots. Crew numbered 31 men. Armament consisted of 4-45cm torpedo tubes, 1-8,8cm gun and 1-12,7mm/0.50” machine gun
