British Lion-class battleship design 1938 according to a D.N.C. Department table dated 8 March 1945

Preceded by the King George V-class and succeeded by the HMS Vanguard. An enlarged improved King George V-class design, which was modified using the experiences of the ongoing Second World War experiences. There were six to be built under the 1938-1940 Naval Programmes, each year two units. The Lion and Temeraire were laid down on 4 July respectively 1 June 1939 both ships were never complete and finally scrapped. The building of Conqueror was awarded in 15 August 1939 and the Thunderer scheduled for November 1939, The latter two ships were even never laid down.  

Displacement 40.610 (standard)-46.835 (deep) tons and as dimensions 433 (length of citadel)-780 (length on waterline)-793 (length over all) x 108 x 34.3 (draught mean deep) x 53.9 (depth of hull) feet. Added note by displacement Thorpe BK II p. 201.

Armament 8-15”guns, 12-5.9” guns, 16-4.1” guns and 16-1.46” guns, none torpedo tubes. Horsepower 130.00 shp allowing a deep clean speed of 28,75knots. Range while 6 months out of dock in tropical waters with a speed of 20 knots around 4.200 nautical miles.

Armour: side belt 15” and horizontal 6”-5”.
